Korean International School supports charity with Christmas crafts, educational booths
Festive cheer filled Korean International School (KIS) in Hong Kong as students raised money for charity.
Pupils organised an on-campus cultural fair, Christmas market and charity sale to support the OSC School Fun4Funds Challenge, part of the annual Operation Santa Claus (OSC) fundraising initiative held by the South China Morning Post and public broadcaster RTHK.
KIS contributed most of the proceeds from the events to the campaign, which is helping 13 charities as well as victims of last November’s Tai Po fire.
Many students joined in the effort, including 26 pupils with special educational needs who designed and handcrafted Christmas cards and decorations for the charity sale in November.
“I helped decorate the cards and ornaments to make a difference to our community,” said student Adrian Lin Shi-tang, who also designed a promotional poster and online form for the charity sale.
The primary school division of KIS’s international section held a cultural fair on December 9. It featured 12 game booths, each representing a country, run by Year Six children as a project incorporated into their learning.
Year Six student Willis Chan Chiu-yin helped organise the Mexico booth: “You have to research everything about the country … And then you have to present the information to all the other primary students,” Willis said.
The secondary school division of the KIS international section held its Christmas Market on December 11, featuring games and crafts designed by students.
Year 10 student Isabella Sasing De La Torre said working with OSC sharpened her awareness of other people’s needs: “OSC spreads the spirit of Christmas and helps people in need,” Isabella said. “It makes me feel the Christmas spirit more – the sharing spirit.”
KIS has backed OSC for more than 20 years.
“It’s about teaching people how to think about more than themselves, how to take care of other people … how to be a good citizen,” said Daniel Hilton, principal of KIS’s international section.
OSC, jointly established by the SCMP and public broadcaster RTHK in 1988, is committed to providing vital community support, particularly in times of disaster. In addition to its annual fundraising drive, it is leading an emergency appeal to meet the needs of residents affected by the Tai Po fire.
